Life Skills and Healthy Behaviors

In addition to classroom learning, One Global Village recognizes how important education on healthy behaviors and life skills is to students’ development. We have long partnered with The Wash Project (run by Tieblecoro in Mali) to ensure everyone at Siraba School is taught the importance of hand washing to their health and well-being. Koro investigated local options for providing health and hygiene training for our students, and in 2016 we were delighted that Hawa Haidara joined Siraba School team. Ms. Haidara graduated from the University in Bamako with a Masters degree in Education Sciences, and wrote her Masters thesis on communicating within families about adolescent sexuality. Pretty ideal qualifications to help our students!  She meets monthly with the older students at Siraba School and also with students in Piébougou, the middle school that Siraba School graduates attend. Some of her lectures are for girls only, others for all students. She put together a comprehensive health education plan and has taught subjects ranging from development and puberty to self care and personal hygiene to food hygiene (purchasing, preparing, eating) to safely collecting and storing water. Not only are students learning very important subjects from her, but Hawa also provides them with another role model of an educated, confident, capable Malian adult – she is both teacher and inspiration. Thank you Hawa!

Sophie is the wordy one on the One Global Village team. When not talking or writing she tends to be learning about something to talk about. One life goal is to communicate in multiple languages (she's working on French and Spanish). Sophie lives in the village of San Francisco.
